The Youth Red Cross (YRC) plays a vital role in shaping compassionate and responsible individuals. As an integral part of the Red Cross movement, the YRC focuses on cultivating a sense of social responsibility, humanitarian values, and leadership skills among young adults. The importance of the Youth Red Cross lies in its ability to empower the youth with knowledge, skills, and a proactive attitude toward community service and disaster response. By participating in YRC activities, students not only contribute to the well-being of society but also gain personal growth, empathy, and a broader perspective on global issues. The YRC equips them with tools to be proactive change-makers, fostering a future generation that is well-prepared to address challenges and create positive impacts on both local and global levels.

The YRC Unit of Al Shifa College of Arts & Science was officially inaugurated on 8 Aug ’23 by Mr. G. Mohan Kumar, IRCS Malappuram District Chairman.

We organized various programs that provide an opportunity for our students to serve humanity. Here are some of the programs organized by the YRC unit of ACAS.

Community Health Awareness Programme

The Youth Red Cross (YRC), National Service Scheme (NSS), and Red Ribbon Club (RRC) units of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science successfully organized a Community Health Awareness Programme on 21 June 2025 in collaboration with the Family Health Centre Keezhattur and the Keezhattur Grama Panchayat.

The programme aimed to create awareness about the prevention of communicable diseases, with a special focus on mosquito-borne illnesses, Jaundice, and the importance of safe drinking water practices. The initiative highlighted the need for maintaining hygiene, proper sanitation, and environmental cleanliness to prevent the spread of diseases.

Volunteers actively engaged with the local community through awareness campaigns, interactive sessions, and demonstrations. They educated residents on preventive measures such as eliminating stagnant water, using protective methods against mosquitoes, and ensuring the consumption of clean and safe drinking water.

Anti-Drugs Day Pledge

The Youth Red Cross (YRC) Unit of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science organized an Anti-Drugs Day Pledge on 29 June 2025 with the objective of raising awareness among students about the harmful effects of drug abuse and promoting a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

The programme was conducted in connection with the observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, emphasizing the need to combat substance abuse and its impact on individuals and society. Students and faculty members actively participated in the event and collectively took a pledge to stay away from drugs and to contribute towards building a drug-free community.

Disaster Management Course

The Youth Red Cross (YRC) Unit and the Centre for Skill Education in association with NSS unit at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science jointly organized a Disaster Management Course from 9 to 12 September 2025 in collaboration with the Kerala Police Department.

The programme aimed to equip students with essential knowledge and practical skills required to respond effectively during emergencies and natural disasters. The training covered key areas such as disaster preparedness, first aid, rescue operations, crowd management, and safety protocols.

Officials and trainers from the Kerala Police Department conducted interactive sessions and practical demonstrations, providing hands-on experience in handling emergency situations. Participants were trained in basic life-saving techniques and were guided on how to act responsibly and efficiently during crises.

Visit to Pratheeksha Buds School, Pandikkad

The Youth Red Cross (YRC) Unit of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science organized a community outreach visit to Pratheeksha Buds School Pandikkad on 27 October 2025 in collaboration with NSS and RRC, as part of its commitment to social responsibility and inclusive service.

The primary objective of the visit was to bring joy and encouragement to differently-abled children while fostering a sense of empathy, compassion, and inclusiveness among the volunteers. The programme created a meaningful platform for students to interact with the children, understand their needs, and appreciate their unique talents and abilities.

During the visit, volunteers engaged the children in various recreational and interactive activities, including games, cultural performances, and informal interactions. These moments of engagement helped in creating a warm and cheerful atmosphere, bringing smiles to the faces of the children.

“Break the Stigma” Programme in Connection with AIDS Day Observance

The Youth Red Cross (YRC) Unit of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, in collaboration with the NSS and Red Ribbon Club (RRC), organized an awareness programme titled “Break the Stigma” on 05 December 2025 at the Seminar Hall, in connection with the observance of World AIDS Day.

The programme aimed to create awareness about HIV/AIDS and to eliminate the stigma, discrimination, and misconceptions associated with the disease. The session emphasized the importance of accurate knowledge, early detection, preventive measures, and compassionate support for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

Various activities, including awareness talks and interactive discussions, were conducted to engage students and enhance their understanding of the issue. The programme encouraged participants to adopt a positive and inclusive attitude towards affected individuals and to act as responsible members of society in spreading awareness.

Medical Camp Supported by YRC, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science

The Youth Red Cross (YRC) unit of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science actively supported the organization of a comprehensive Free Medical Camp, organized by Sree Kadampuzha Temple Charitable Trust in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society and Amrita Hospital. The camp was held on 7th December 2025 (Sunday) from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, aiming to provide accessible and quality healthcare services to the public.

The medical camp was conducted as part of a humanitarian initiative to extend free medical consultation and treatment support to people, especially those from underserved communities. A team of experienced doctors and healthcare professionals offered their services, ensuring proper diagnosis and expert medical advice.

The YRC volunteers from Al Shifa College of Arts and Science played a crucial role in the success of the programme. They were actively involved in registration, patient assistance, coordination with medical teams, and crowd management, ensuring the smooth functioning of the camp.

Palliative Care Day Observance on 15 January 2026

The The Youth Red Cross (YRC ) and the Students Initiative Programme (SIP) of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, in collaboration with Melatur Pain and Palliative Clinic and NSS Unit of the college, meaningfully observed Palliative Care Day on 15 January 2026 at Melatur. The programme was organized with the objective of creating awareness about the importance of palliative care and extending compassionate support to individuals suffering from chronic and life-limiting illnesses.

The observance commenced with an awareness message rally led by enthusiastic NSS volunteers. Holding placards and banners carrying thought-provoking slogans, the rally moved through the main streets of Melatur town. The volunteers actively interacted with the public, spreading awareness about the significance of palliative care in improving the quality of life of patients and their families. The rally succeeded in capturing public attention and instilling a sense of social responsibility among the community members.

Blood Donation Camp on 16 February 2026

The Youth Red Cross in collaboration with National Service Scheme (NSS) and Red Ribbon Club of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, successfully organized a Blood Donation Camp on 16 February 2026 at the college campus. The programme was conducted with the noble objective of promoting voluntary blood donation and creating awareness about the importance of saving lives through this humanitarian act.

The camp was inaugurated by a distinguished guest in the presence of college authorities, including the principal, programme officers, and faculty members. In the inaugural address, the speakers emphasized the significance of blood donation as a life-saving service and encouraged students to actively participate in such initiatives for the welfare of society.

A team of qualified medical professionals and staff from a reputed blood bank ensured the smooth and safe conduct of the donation process. Prior to donation, all volunteers underwent a basic health check-up to ensure their eligibility. The donors were guided and supported throughout the process, maintaining proper hygiene and medical standards. Many students, staff, and volunteers enthusiastically participated in the camp. Their willingness to donate blood reflected a strong sense of social responsibility and compassion towards those in need. The camp witnessed the successful collection of a significant number of units of blood, which will be utilized for emergency medical treatments and patient care. The Blood Donation Camp concluded on a positive note, reinforcing the message that a single unit of blood can save multiple lives. The initiative not only addressed an essential healthcare need but also instilled the values of empathy, service, and community engagement among students.
