Department of Economics

The Department of Economics is part of ACAS from its inception in 2020. The Department works towards creating a class of graduates firmly rooted in the fundamentals of Economics and capable of understanding and analyzing problems which spring up time to time, relating to world of Business and Economics.

The Bachelor of Economics programme offered by the Department is rightly complemented by papers from Sociology and Psychology. In line with the philosophy of the College, the theoretical input provided will be strongly backed up by real life applications. The students will be made to be alert to evolving local, National and Global economic scenario and emerging issues will be made part of the classroom experience.

The Economics Association will step in to organize activities which will give additional participative and leadership opportunities to the Students. Together these will provide the students an extra edge in deeply understanding and critically analyzing the economic and allied issues.

The quality of the Degree programme we deliver is strengthened by the additional certificate and diploma programmes listed for the interested takers. All these are conceived by taking into account the career prospects emerging in the subject and the skills and accessory qualifications required for the Degree holders to be qualified for the careers in the future. Add On Programmes/ Value Added Programme

The department of Economics offers various addon courses for the BA Economics students. The course is framed to upskill the students and to familiarise the recent additions to the subject. Students get certain additional benefits and opens to explore the subject beyond curriculum. The courses focus on the core skill area and target to meet the expected industry needs. The courses offered are as follows;

Semester I: Banking Services

The course has been designed to expose students to the understanding of commercial banking and its technicalities. Commercial banking is a complex business activity that involves various financial operations and intermediation. Moreover, it operates under government regulations. The course aims to expose students to the intricacies of banking business and to help them in understanding the main regulations required to be followed in such a business.

Semester II: Basic Statistics and Calculus

The addon course ‘Basic Statistics and Calculus’ is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in fundamental concepts and techniques of statistics and calculus. It aims to equip students with the necessary mathematical tools and analytical skills to understand and analyze data, make informed decisions, and solve problems in various fields.

Semester III: Descriptive Statistics

The addon course ‘Descriptive Statistics’ is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts and techniques used to describe and summarize data. This course focuses on equipping students with the necessary skills to organize, analyze, and interpret data effectively.

Semester IV: Data Visualization and Interpretation

Data visualization and Interpretation offers support to students to build career in Applied Economics and provides an opportunity to enter the growing field of Data Science. This course focuses on the visualization and presentation of data dealing with table and diagrammatic presentations. Through this course students get in hand experience on making various representations of information or data while using different visualization tools.

Semester V: Basics of SPSS

Addon course “Basics of SPSS” is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software for data analysis. SPSS is widely used in various fields, including social sciences, business, and research, for analyzing and interpreting data. Throughout the course, students are likely to engage in hands-on exercises, practice data analysis using SPSS, and work on projects that require applying SPSS for real-world data analysis scenarios. The course may also include assessments and quizzes to evaluate students’ understanding and proficiency in using SPSS.

Value added Course: Excel for Professional Studies

The Department of Economics at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science is delighted to introduce a value-added course titled “Excel for Professional Studies.” This course has been specifically designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel in various professional fields.

This course aims to enhance students’ understanding and practical application of Excel, empowering them to effectively analyze and interpret data, streamline processes, and make informed decisions. Throughout the course, students will gain hands-on experience in utilizing Excel’s powerful features and functions. They will learn how to create and format spreadsheets, manage and organize data, perform calculations and data analysis, create charts and graphs for data visualization, and automate tasks using formulas and macros.

Outreach/ Extension

Financial Literacy Awareness Programme for Women

The Department of Economics aims to enhance the professional capacity of women in the Keezhattur Panchayath. The department has planned to provide literacy awareness among unemployed women in the panchayath. In collaboration with the Women Development Cell (WDC) at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, the department has prepared modules covering financial matters and aims to build awareness regarding financial practices. The program also seeks to foster financial confidence and emphasize the importance of engaging in financial practices. We believe that financial literacy is crucial for women to achieve economic independence and take control of their financial well-being.

Capacity Building/ Skill Enhancement Initiatives

The department of Economics has formulated numerous activities to enhance the competency of the students. The department prepared plan-oriented schedule to deliver in the skill hour. The department focuses to enhance writing competency of the students and to for enhance academic reading and writing. The department organised exclusive session to understand Academic writings in Economics by the notable scholars from the nationally reputed institution.

The capacity building and Skill enhancement initiatives of the department are as follows;

  • Interventions for Enhance Writing Competency
  • Writing competency ensured through understanding the structure and orientation of script/writing. It was educated through the workshop and invited lecture.

  • Student Centric Association programs
  • Weekly Association build confidence among the students to address the audience. It enhances the presentation skill as well as develop the organising skill among the students. Pre- prepared schedule shared and the association programs runs in every Wednesday last hour.

  • Integrating teaching learning through ICT
  • In order to reduce the complexity of teaching learning, department initiated by integrating audio visual tools through the ICT Tools. The teaching learning progresses through integrating quality lectures available in the repository graphics and make use of the internet resources exhibit with the help of the OHP.

Career Development Programmes

The Department of Economics organises career orientation sessions to bring awareness among the students to understand the career choices available for them. The Department and Career Training and Placement Cell (CTPC) at ACAS takes the accountability and provide semester specific intervention to orient to towards the career destination. The department envisages the sessions to impart information regarding the academic and career pathways of the subject. The timely intervention ensures the students to make appropriate choice from the available many options. The department equip the students to opt appropriate career destination through one-on-one intervention.

Student Initiatives

The Department of Economics envisages curricular and cocurricular practices to make initiatives more on student centric rather than the teacher centric. Students of the department participated many cocurricular practices of the club cell and the college. The academic presentation of the students was notable in this aspects and participated events like quiz, panel discussion and debate and cultural programs.

The department released a magazine named ‘Econ’ deals the economic matters and creative artefacts of the students. It comprises of the write ups of the students from the department like poems, articles, drawings, recognising notable economists from India as well as across the world and familiarise the contributions of Nobel laurates in Economics etc.

The Department also promotes the academic research and writing skills of the students. Department hosted two-day international students’ seminar and that was purely students centric. All the activities regarding the seminar were coordinated b y the department students and even the selected students got opportunity to present papers in the seminar.

Publications

The Department of Economics is progressing with the publication process and has planned to publish a book titled “Knowledge Economy: Prospects of Kerala.” The book explores the potentials and possibilities of the state in developing a knowledge-driven economy. The department has incorporated publication interventions to integrate the creative works of the students at the departmental level. As a result, a magazine titled “Econ” was published.

The Student Economist Award (SEA) is a prominent innovative intervention of the department aimed at fostering a vibrant culture of applied learning among aspiring undergraduates and graduate economics students. SEA endeavors to act as a catalyst for intellectual stimulation, providing students with a platform to apply the theoretical and academic knowledge they have acquired to concrete contexts. This is particularly crucial at a time when there is an urgent need to transition to applied, experiential learning methodologies.

About the Centre

The Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science is a research
institution or academic center focused on the interdisciplinary study of migration in the Malappuram
district. This center typically conduct research, produce publications, organize conferences, and
collaborate with scholars and experts in the field of migration studies. The focus of the Centre for
Migration Studies is research and analysis, it may include migration patterns and trends, the causes
and consequences of migration, immigration policies and their impacts, integration and assimilation
