Department of Psychology

B Sc Psychology Programme at ACAS is a three-year degree programme with Human Physiology and Psychological Statistics as complementary subjects. The experience of doing psychology at ACAS will stand out as it is underpinned by exposure to the evolving trends and structured career awareness interventions for personal career inclinations and the preparedness for it. ACAS offers all UG programmes with add-on programmes which aim at upskilling, career-readiness and a suite of events to expose them to real-life challenges and work-related demands. Our collaborations with leading institutions of repute also guarantees a quality graduation experience. The collaboration we have with KIMS-Al Shifa Super Speciality Hospital , an Al Shifa Venture, puts our Psychology programme entirely in a different category in terms of training and output.

Psychology is also offered as a complementary subject to the B A Economics students during the first and third semesters.

Semester 1 

Community Intervention 

The add-on course on Community Intervention is aimed at giving an introduction to the field of community psychology, including constructing projects, working with non- governmental organizations, and fieldwork, and learning about government projects to support people with mental health issues. The students will be able to understand how psychologists work with different communities around us.

Semester 2 

Fundamentals of Sports Psychology 

The Fundamentals of Sports Psychology course serves as an introduction to sports psychology as a whole. This course covers fundamental ideas in sports psychology such as mental toughness, team cohesiveness, leadership, motivation, aggression and mental imagery. The sports psychology course will cover both theoretical and practical issues during this course period.

Semester 3 

Basics of Forensic Psychology 

The add-on course on Forensic Psychology will help better comprehend the methods employed in the discipline, the functions of forensic psychologists, and the reach of forensic psychology in India. A general overview of forensic psychology is provided in this course. The sessions will also include discussions of notable forensic cases.

Semester 4 

Computer Applications in Psychology 

Students will learn about computer data utilised in psychology, SPSS software for psychological research purposes, data entry in psychological settings, and other fundamental applications that will be employed in their professional area through Computer Application in Psychology course. The training is designed to cover both theoretical concepts and practical applications. Through this course, students will be able to learn about different online resources for psychological research.

Semester 5 

ICD Classifications of Psychopathology

Students will gain familiarity with the psychiatric diseases based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) through this course. Students are made familiar with the fundamentals of psychotic and neurotic spectrum disorders, how to handle challenges, and the fundamental therapies used for a range of psychological conditions. This curriculum includes a hospital visit as well.

Semester 6 

Consumer Psychology

The Consumer Psychology add-on course will prepare students to learn about the processes used by clients and customers to select, purchase, use, and discard products and services. Students will learn about the basic techniques used in consumer psychology and theories that are related to consumer psychology.

Add On Programmes/ Value Added Programme

Outreach/ Extension

HASH (Hands Around Shoulders)

Hands around Shoulders (HASH) is an initiative of the Department of Psychology at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science. The togetherness called HASH means to be a group of caring youngsters which will be characterised by its willingness to know the others and support them.

HASH aims at understanding the problems of students and becoming an empathetic support to them. An advisory panel composed of faculty members of the Department and the Principal will constitute the core of HASH. There will be selected student members in HASH under the advisory panel.

The areas of work of HASH include addressing drug and substance abuse related issues, students’ personal, interpersonal problems, and adjustment issues of students on campus.

The HASH members are trained to be good listeners and will interact with their friends to know whether they have any difficulties. The problems identified or accessed by HASH will be shared with the advisory panel for necessary action and assistance of the advisory panel. HASH will conduct a programme each month. The information created by HASH will be highly confidential and will not be disclosed to any other person without the consent of the advisory panel.

Capacity Building/ Skill Enhancement Initiatives

ASSET (Al Shifa Students Society for Education and Training)

ASSET is the department association of psychology, led by the students of the department. Students have the opportunity to prove their leadership skills through many events conducted under the ASSET programme. Many skill development programmes were conducted by the association.

Department Podcast

The department has run a podcast on Spotify named “ASSET Playlist.” Students have the opportunity to explore their presentation skills through the programme. Every student can present the topics on the podcast, which will be published on Spotify. Various topics in psychology, including new trends, career opportunities, ethical issues, recent events, etc., can be presented in audio format on this platform.

Skill Hour

Every week we have a skill hour to develop students’ skill sets. The pre-planned schedule will be followed to cover almost all essential skills in psychology. Many soft skills, hard skills, and psychological skills can be developed with the help of the skill hour. In each semester, we will focus on different types of skills that will upgrade the competency of the students.

Career Development Programmes

Career Pathways – Career Orientation Sessions

The Department of Psychology, in collaboration with the Career Training and Placement Cell (CTPC), is conducting a series of career training programmes. Students will be provided with a basic to advanced level of knowledge about careers in psychology through this programme. The department will then assist the students in selecting a suitable career and train them in the area in which they are focused.

Student Initiatives

Student’s Colloquium

The student colloquium is the students’ initiative in the psychology department. Students will conduct an open discussion on many matters related to psychology and mental health. Students will be the key speakers, moderators, and audience members. They can clarify their doubts regarding psychology through this programme. Each year, a student colloquium will be conducted on various topics.
