Report on observence of ‘Vaikkam Muhammad Basheer Day’ by Thanimalayalam club held on 12 July 2021 via Gmeet.

Thanimalayalam Club of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, commemorated Vaikom Muhammed Basheer Day with screening of Malayalam movies and talk by Mr. Amnus Baby, on 12 July 2021. The famous movies of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, Mathilukal and Bhargaveenilayam, were asked to be watched by the students as a part of the programme.

Ms. Febina, Assistant Professor of Malayalam in her welcome address stated that any person with a fair knowledge in Malayalam can effortlessly grasp the works of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, due to the simplicity in his use of language. She also said that Basheer is one of the most read writers in Malayalam.
In his Principal’s addresss, Dr. P.K. Babu, pitched the importance of language, the style of rendering, the ecological importance and ecocritical ideas in the work of Basheer.

The Chief Guest Mr. Amnus Baby, Guest Lecturer, Madhurai Kamaraj University Malayalam Department, explained how timeless Vaikom Muhammed Basheer’s works are. He shared his thoughts on the changes in ideas of love with reference to the acid attacks and other violent reactions that ubiquitously crop up on the love failures today. The divine love of Majeed and Suhara in Basheer’s Balyakaala Sakhi is seldom seen today, he added. He also talked about the transitory love affairs in the context of the character Narayani from Basheer’s movie Mathilukal who loves merely through voice of her lover.

He said that the Malayalam horror movies have still not progressed far beyond Basheer’s Bhargavinilayam with reference to the recent horror movies Cold Case and Chathurmugham.
The talk was concluded with a vote of thank by Sanjay, student of II Semester BCom Finance.
