The Department of English and Languages conducted a Research Forum on 12 June 2026 at 3.00 PM in the Conference Room, featuring a presentation by Saritha K., Vice Principal, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science. She presented the paper titled “Misogynistic and Homophobic ‘Banter’ in UK Digitised ‘Lad Cultures’: Using Research and Homosocial Affect Theory in an Educational Resource to Tackle Harmful Masculine Norms” by Craig Haslop and Fiona O’Rourke.

The presentation examined how misogynistic and homophobic forms of “banter” are normalized within digitised lad cultures in the United Kingdom, particularly through social media platforms and online communities. Saritha highlighted the authors’ use of Homosocial Affect Theory to explore how emotional bonds and peer-group dynamics among young men can reinforce harmful masculine norms and discriminatory attitudes. The study also discussed the development of educational resources to challenge these behaviours and encourage more inclusive forms of masculinity.

The session emphasized the importance of addressing gender-based prejudice and homophobia in contemporary digital spaces. Discussions focused on the role of education in fostering critical awareness, promoting respectful communication, and creating safer online environments. The presentation concluded with an engaging interaction on the relevance of such research in higher education and its potential to contribute to more equitable and inclusive social practices.
