About Consumer Club

The consumer club is established specially for creating awareness among the students regarding the consumer’s rights and privileges. It aims to build a base of enlightened citizen customers as the foundation of future India.

Aims and Objectives

VISION

To educate students about their fundamental rights as consumers and to make them aware of and, learn about their essential responsibilities as citizens. To provide our college students with consumer rights information and skills. To make them aware of consumer protection laws, product standards, product quality, and market information.

MISSION

To spread awareness on consumer rights amongst all consumer segments, especially among
college students. To reach the unreached by imparting knowledge and training on consumer
awareness to our students and enable them to teach the village personnel.

OBJECTIVES

Activities

The Consumer Club under the Dept. of Commerce, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, conducted a field visit to SM Street, Calicut, on July 14, 2023, and conducted a market survey. 43 members of the Club and 3 faculty members were part of the visit. The members conducted a survey among the consumers and retailers as part of the visit. Mr. Irshad Ameen. K, Assistant Professor of Commerce and coordinator of the Club, Ms. Ashida. A. P. and Ms. Mini. V. K., Assistant Professors of Commerce, accompanied the students.

The primary objectives of the market visit were to create awareness among consumers and retailers about their rights and responsibilities. The Consumer Club members actively engaged with consumers during the survey, providing them with information about their rights as consumers, such as the right to information, the right to safety, the right to choose, and the right to be heard. The Consumer Club members were divided into six teams to carry out the survey efficiently. They used a combination of questionnaires and face-to-face interviews to collect data from both consumers and retailers.

The Consumer Club, operating under the Department of Commerce at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, organized a program entitled “Your Voice Matters: Join the Conversation with Our Advocate” on December 5, 2023, at the Conference Hall. The distinguished speaker for the event was Advocate Jaseel Mohammed, who engaged the audience in a thoughtful discussion on various aspects of consumer rights. The discourse delved into significant topics such as the 1986 Consumer Rights Act, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the film ‘Wakkalath Narayanan Kutty,’ the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC), E-Commerce, Online Purchases, and the Central Consumer Protection Act. Advocate Mohammed also shed light on the penalties and provisions associated with consumer rights, as well as the procedures for filing cases related to consumer disputes. The event proved to be an enlightening and informative session for attendees, fostering a greater understanding of the legal framework surrounding consumer rights.

The Consumer Club, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, Keezhattur, conducted a drawing competition on 27 November 2023. The drawing contest was all about “Consumer Rights.” Comprising a total of fourteen participants from various departments, each contributor demonstrated their artistic prowess by crafting visual representations that underscored the significance of equitable treatment for consumers. The thematic exploration encompassed subjects such as the assurance of product safety, advocacy for fair trade practices, and the promotion of informed decision-making among consumers. The resulting artworks not only served as a testament to the participants’ creative capabilities but also functioned as a pedagogical tool, enlightening observers about the critical importance of consumer rights. Students actively participated in the drawing competition. The program was coordinated by the Consumer Club members. Ashidha A. P., Head of the Department of Commerce, visited the program and shared some thoughts with the participants regarding the importance of Consumer Rights

The Consumer Club in collaboration with the Department of Commerce, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science (ACAS), organized a Poster Making Competition for students on 29 November 2023. Ms. Jamsiya of I Semester B. Com Finance and Mr. Muhammed Hakeem of III Semester B. Com Taxation won first and second prizes respectively. The prizes were distributed by Dr. P. Unneen. Managing Trustee, Shifa Medicare Trust (SMT), on 21 December 2023. Mr. K. T. Abdul Rassaque, Secretary, SMT, Mr. Pilakkal Hamza, Chief Executive, SMT, Dr. Babu. P. K, Principal, ACAS, Ms. Mini. V. K, Head, Dept. of Commerce, ACAS, and Mr. Irshad Ameen. K, Coordinator, Consumer Club were present on the occasion.

The Consumer Club under the Dept. of Commerce, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, conducted a Peer Training Workshop on News Paper Bag Making for Consumer Club Members on 21 September, 2023. Hamna VT and Ahsan Ahammed, 5th-semester B. Com. students and members of the Consumer Club at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, were the Trainers. The workshop focused on the eco-friendly aspects of bags made with newspaper and their potential as a sustainable business venture. Participants learned the art of crafting paper bags and explored the significance of adopting environmentally responsible practices.

They also distributed paper bags produced by our college students during the workshop among Faculties, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, Al Shifa College of Pharmacy and Finally to the Cafeteria, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science. Five consumer club members participated in the distribution process. By encouraging the use of these bags, they aim to foster a greener community and create awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.

Hamna VT and Shifna K T, 5th-semester B. Com students, Consumer Club members, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, Keezhattur, Perinthalmanna, were invited as resource persons to the Event “EMPEZAR”, a Pre-Training Workshop, organized by the ED Club, MES Mampad College (Autonomous), on July 27, 2023. The event aimed to promote social entrepreneurship among students. The workshop focused on the eco-friendly aspects of paper bags and their potential as a sustainable business venture. Participants learned the art of crafting paper bags and explored the significance of adopting environmentally responsible practices.

Hamna VT, 5th-semester B. Com student, Consumer Club members, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, Keezhattur, Perinthalmanna, were invited as recourse person to the Event name “Craft Workshop” a Pre-Training Workshop, organized by the ED Club, Ideal College, Kadakassery, on December 21, 2023. The event aimed to promote social entrepreneurship among students. The workshop focused on the eco-friendly aspects of paper bags and their potential as a sustainable business venture. Participants learned the art of crafting paper bags and explored the significance of adopting environmentally responsible practices. The had a substantial impact, directly benefiting a total of 88 students.

The Consumer Club under the Dept. of Commerce, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, conducted a Peer Training Workshop on Newspaper Bag Making for 2nd Semester BA Economics on February 8, 2024. Muhammed Farzeen Shahal, Ahsan Ahammed, Aysha Nishna. P, Afeefa. P, and Abid, 6th-semester B. Com. students and members of the Consumer Club at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, were the trainers. The workshop focused on the eco-friendly aspects of bags made with newspapers and their potential as a sustainable business venture. Participants learned the art of crafting paper bags and explored the significance of adopting environmentally responsible practices. The programme which benefited for 19 students.

The Consumer Club at Al Shifa College of Arts and Science distributed more than 400 paper bags, produced by college students, among the retail shops on a monthly basis . The endeavor is aimed at promoting sustainable practices and reducing plastic waste. By advocating the use of these bags, their goal is to cultivate a greener community and raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
