The Department of English, Al Shifa College of Arts and Science, Perinthalmanna, organized an Invited Student Talk titled “A Blue Humanities Reading of The Old Man and the Sea” on 29 July 2026 at 12:05 p.m. in the Conference Hall. The session featured Ms. Mariyam Hiba, a Third Semester M.A. English student of St. Mary’s College, Puthanangadi, as the resource person.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome by Ms. Masharifa V., a student of S5 B.A. English Language and Literature, who also introduced the speaker and highlighted her academic background. In her engaging presentation, Ms. Mariyam Hiba explored Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea through the lens of Blue Humanities, emphasizing the relationship between humans and the marine environment. She offered insightful interpretations of the novel’s ecological dimensions, encouraging students to view the text from a contemporary environmental perspective.
The interactive session that followed enabled students to clarify their doubts and actively engage with the ideas presented. The programme proved to be academically enriching and inspired participants to explore new approaches to literary criticism.
