The programme was held from 24 to 28 May 2021 with Professionalism, Integrating Activities to Teaching, Presentation Skills, Leadership Skills and Motivational skills as core areas in 5 at 8-9.30 am on Google Meet. The sessions were handled by Dr. Babu. P. K, the known Faculty Trainer and Principal, Al Shifa College of Arts & Science. The event got a total number of 91 registrations from college teachers of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Ms. Saritha. K, Head of English, coordinated the event.
The session on ‘Professionalism’ dealt with the ten traits on how to become professional in teaching. Student satisfaction is to be given the first priority by a teacher. A teacher requires hard effort, constant quest and inquisitiveness to become expert in the area of his specialization. In addition to that, one has to give more than expected.
The second session, ‘Integrating Activities to Teaching’, emphasized that activity-based learning is proven effective by researchers and that only properly planned activities would bring result. It also reminded that activities should not be for activity’s sake, instead it should be meaningfully integrated. Using tasks in teaching is a sign of professionalism in teaching, the speaker added.
Presentation Skills elucidated the importance of body language, voice modulation, eye contact and pace of speech and how it influences one’s performance as a teacher. The attendees were provided with tips to enhance these aspects.
The various types of leadership were illustrated in the session on ‘Leadership Skills’, on the 4th day. Leadership qualities in a teacher are essential to tackle the students’ problems and run activities in departments. Leadership style will vary depending upon the staff and one needs to know when to exhibit a particular approach. Teacher will have to use these various leadership traits according to the situation and an ideal leader always finds solutions for problems.
The curtain fell on ‘Short Term Faculty Development Programme’, with the session on ‘Motivational Skills’. Only a self-motivated teacher can motivate the students. To remain motivated, a teacher should be in constant pursuit of passion, the speaker stated. Dr. Babu. P. K, engaged the participants with interesting anecdotes and by giving short breaks for exchange of views during the session. The audience were entertained with live examples and touching life incidents, thereby walking his talk. Feedback was collected and E-Certificates were issued to all the participants who registered for the FDP.
