A session on mentoring, ‘Be a Mentor’ was held in Lecture Hall 4, on 17 December 21 at 2 pm, for the faculty members of Al Shifa College of Arts and Science. The session commenced with a welcome address by Ms. Saritha. K, Head, Department of English. The talk was led by the principal Dr. P. K. Babu in which he talked about the essential qualities a mentor should possess. He said that a mentor should give attention to the wellbeing and career of a mentee. He also explained various stages in the process of mentoring. A mentor should have a well-prepared plan on how to mentor a child but at the same time it should be flexible if situation demands.
He said that a mentor should never force his interests upon a mentee rather understand the interests and goals and guide him in the right way to achieve his goal. A mentor should adapt to the style of the mentee and should be ready to share his experiences and anecdotes with the mentee. He should build a rapport with the mentee and should be patient. He posed a few questions to the audience for a self-assessment on whether they are good mentors or whether they possess the qualities to be a good mentor.
He explained a few points which hinder the process of mentoring such as too much of confidentiality from the mentee’s side, not having a clear goal, mentor being too rigid etc. Dr. P.K. Babu, in the session, emphasized on the fact that being a mentor is not an easy task and anyone cannot be a mentor.
The session came to an end at 4 pm with a vote of thanks by Mr. Rohit. R, Head, Department of Commerce. The session was coordinated by Ms. Sabina, Mentor-Mentee programme coordinator.
